Marcus Jansen Foundation, is a proud donor of $5000 to the Motthaven Fridge Network now called Grassroots Grocery, NY.
Grace ShugaOn Sunday, September 19th at 1pm, the Mott Haven Fridge Network hosted its first “Brunch on a Bronx Sidewalk” on 141st St. between Crimmins and St. Ann’s (50 mtrs N of 571 E 141st St.). Nearly a year after the first “free food” community fridge debuted in Mott Haven, community members, partners, volunteers, donors, and interns will come together to break bread at the home of the first ever Mott Haven Fridge. Attendees enjoyed the communal meal on two long tables adorned with white cloths, flowers, and food from participating establishments including Luke’s Lobster, Great Performances, Tacombi, and Mottley Kitchen. The event also featured live music and speeches from community stakeholders and concluded with a raffle offering prizes from local businesses.
Local resident and volunteer Shirley Blanchard, whose birthday was the day after the event, was excited to celebrate with her fellow neighbors. “Before the fridge was here, the sidewalk was covered in garbage, but we made it nice and clean. We’re going to have a party here on Sunday, and everyone is going to eat and have fun, no matter who they are and where they come from,” Blanchard said.
The event was sponsored by the men’s fashion blogger Diego Leon (@dandyinthebronx), South Bronx Wine & Liquor, the Marcus Jansen Foundation, Richard Beavers Gallery, and fitness trainer Benjamin Levy.
Dan Zauderer, co-founder and executive director, insists that while the event takes place in front of the Network’s first fridge, it’s also meant to celebrate big changes coming soon. “The great thing is, our work to expand our network and establish new fridges has proved that Mott Haven isn’t alone. Everywhere, there are neighbors who are ready to help neighbors,” Zauderer said. The Network has 3 more fridges slated to launch in September and its volunteer driver network continues to expand every day.

At the age of 74, foster parent Helen Coppage saw the need for a dedicated residential program that would allow teenage foster mothers and their babies to remain together as mother and child; one that would teach them the additional skills they would need to be independent and self-sufficient parenting adults.
With seven years of profound determination, Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida, Inc. (OMH) became a reality after being dedicated on Mother’s Day of 2000. Helen passed away later in the same year at age 81.
Since then, over 400+ mothers and children have benefited from the Our Mother’s Home Mentored Living Program, successfully preserving families, transitioning foster mothers to self-sufficiency, and saving the lives of children by avoiding their re-entry into foster care.
